The Allen Park Police Department provides service to its citizens through a full time police force. The uniform division ensures rapid response and is divided into three shifts to provide 24 hour service. The Detective Bureau handles the investigation following the initial response by the uniform division.

Police Chief Dean Tamsen has been named as the city’s public safety director.

The City Council met in executive session Monday night and unanimously approved the position. According to the resolution, the change was made to streamline the management of public safety. His salary and benefits will remain the same, as defined by his contract, the resolution said. City Administrator Eric Waidelich said all of the administrative and grant-writing functions will be shared between the Police and Fire departments.“When it comes to budget development, he is going to be doing the overall executive management of both departments,” he said.

Waidelich said the city most likely still will need a fire chief, but the position has not been posted.“Part of the reason is that due to the economics of the department, we did not want to officially make any other kinds of changes until we figured out exactly what was going to happen with the fire union (concession negotiations),” he said. Tamsen has been with the Police Department since 1980 and has served as chief since 2006.Councilman Tony Lalli recommended creating the position. He said the change was long overdue.“I think it’s a great thing for citizens of Allen Park because it’s a substantial savings,” he said. “With (Tamsen’s) ability and common sense, he’s going to be a good man for the city.”Lalli said the city should expect for an even worse economy next year.“If you’re working for the city, you’ve got to help out,” he said. “The good times are over.”Tamsen was unavailable for comment by yesterday afternoon.
